DELICIOUS - Michael Price

Delicious is described as '...a bittersweet, darkly comic romance' that tells the story of a passionate chef resorting to extreme measures in an attempt to get an obsessive dieter to eat good food.

Synopsis

Recently released from prison, French chef Jacques pursues an obsession -- to leave his past behind and work for the great British chef Victor Ellwood. He knows Victor had an affair with his mother and may even be his dad. Working for iron-fisted Victor is back-breaking, but his existence is softened by the presence of a curious girl living in the downstairs flat. As he falls in love with her, he realises she not only has an aversion to restaurants, but food of all kinds. Is her eating disorder a force too resilient for anything, even love to cure?

Directed by Tammy Riley-Smith and starring Louise Brealey, Nico Rogner and British screen stalwart Sheila Hancock the film takes the viewer on a journey deep into the minds of the main characters; their emotions, their obsessions, their loves and their tastes!

Michael Price (Sherlock, Lightfields, Gangsta Granny) has provided the viewer/listener with a beautiful texture of sounds to accompany the journey of the main protagonists; much like a warm cup of tea and a slice of cake on a cold wet English day. Fans of Michael's work on the Sherlock series will enjoy this album immensley just as much as any newbie to the world of Michael Price... you are in for a sweet, sugary treat. You cannot help but become immersed in what is happening on screen as the stories unfold and the subtle Gallic undertones that lead the score along make you want to jump on a Eurostar and head to Paris!

Utilising piano, soft strings, light percussion, guitar and accordian the score is a well balanced, melodic and thoroughly uplifting experience that builds as each track passes. Anyone that has had the pleasure of walking through the back streets of a French city and listened to the 'cafe music' punctuating the night air will appreciate what Michael and The Budapest Cafe Orchestra have achieved with this score; beautifully warm themes and tunes that make you unwittingly tap your feet and move to the beat. I can remember watching a street band perform at the Place des Vosges many years ago when visiting Paris and listening to 'The Statue' I have been transported to that exact spot that holds so many special memories. The album is interspersed with vocal tracks from Cicero Buck, Selah Corbin and Polly Paulusma and they are unobstrusive in their placement and accompany Michael Price's themes very well. If you have listened to Michael's 2013 score to 'Cheerful Weather for the Wedding' you will quickly realise how adept he is at drawing together the many complex layers of the visual elements of cinematography and processing it through his music for the viewer to experience the emotion and pleasures in full.

Not since Chocolat (Rachel Portman) and Ratatouille (Michael Giacchino) has a food inspired film been supported so aptly by a strong, lush and lyrical score. Full of layers, textures and meaning Michael Price has delivered a score that shows how music for picture should be written...The proof is in the pudding and the title of the film says it all... the album is simply 'delicious'.
